There's not much of a connection between Nick Morgan and Ariel Dorfman, I suppose. The connection here is that I saw the film, A Promise to the Dead - a bio pic of sorts - about The 1973 coup in Chile and Ariel Dorfman, specifically at the Sanctuary for Independent Media. I learned a lot from this film. Its as if the recent history of Latin America does not exist in US public schools... then again, its hard to think of one thing i actually learned in high school. After seeing the film, I think it's one of the most important political eras and/or progressions to understand and think about with respect to protofascism and the real threat of a police state in this country. Anyways. the connection.....
....in this case, is that i awoke to this email in my inbox from Eileen at I-Witness. Checkout the video link. I see video of police abusing protestors all the time, but this time I was struck by the similarity of the clips of scenes from the street in Chile in 73 and 74. On Thursday morning, Iraq vet Nick Morgan will undergo surgery at the Veterans Administration hospital in Philadelphia to help repair the bones in his face which were broken when a police horse trampled him at a protest outside last week's presidential debate.
I-Witness Video cameraperson Emily Forman documented the scene as out-of-control Nassau County police officers on horses charged a small group of Iraq Veterans Against the War and other demonstrators as they stood on the sidewalk near the gates of Hofstra University, the venue for the debate. Forman's video captures the exact moment that a police horse stepped on former Army Sergeant Morgan's face. After a frame-by-frame analysis of the video, she was also able to identify the mounted police officer responsible for injuring Morgan and others.
